Summer by Design: Inspired by Sea Island, Georgia
Every summer, my family and I return to Sea Island, Georgia - a place that continues to inspire both personally and professionally. It’s not just a beloved tradition for us; it’s a source of creative energy that quietly fuels much of my design work throughout the year. Being there, surrounded by the manicured beauty of the island, the serenity of the coast, and the timeless elegance of its architecture, reminds me of what thoughtful design is truly about: comfort, connection, and restraint.
Where Elegance Meets Ease
I’m always struck by the details at Sea Island. The property is impeccably maintained, yet never feels overdone. The lush landscaping—from sculpted hedges and swaying palms, gorgeous planters and native grasses—creates a living palette of texture and calm. Every corner of the island is intentional and inviting, and it reminds me that great design doesn’t have to shout; sometimes, it simply sets the tone for peace.
Soft Sands, Sea Blues, and Marsh Greens
I find that I’m constantly pulling from the natural color palette of the coast—the soft sands, misty blues, warm driftwood tones, and cool marsh greens. These are the colors I find myself returning to again and again, no matter what type of space I’m desigining. They bring a sense of quiet sophistication, and they ground a space in a way that feels timeless.
The Beauty of Balanced, Intentional Design
The architecture of Sea Island is another endless source of inspiration. From the classic tabby concrete and white trim at The Cloister, to the shingle-style homes nestled among the oaks, everything is rooted in tradition, but with a relaxed elegance that feels distinctly coastal. I find myself drawn to the symmetry, the scale, the way natural materials are used with intention and integrity. It’s a reminder that good design doesn’t chase trends—it honors history, setting, and lifestyle.
Design That Reflects the Way We Live
What makes all of this even more meaningful is experiencing it with my family. Whether we’re biking under moss-draped trees, spending the day in the sunshine at The Beach Club, or gathering for slow dinners after long days in the sand, it’s these moments that reinforce why design matters. The best spaces, like the best memories, are warm, layered, and built to be shared.
Each year, I leave Sea Island full of fresh perspective—not just about colors or textures or finishes, but about how a space should feel. It should make you want to slow down. It should bring the outside in. And most of all, it should reflect the people who live there.
Designing with that in mind is always my goal!
